What is ISBN Code
What is an ISBN?
An ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is a unique 13-digit ID for a specific book edition. Stores, libraries, and distributors use it to find and catalog your book.
Do I need an ISBN to publish my book?
Not if you only sell on your own site or give copies away. You do need one for most bookstores, libraries, and major retailers (e.g., Amazon for print books).
Can one ISBN cover paperback, hardcover, and eBook?
No. Each format and edition needs its own ISBN (paperback, hardcover, eBook, audiobook, revised editions, etc.).
Do eBooks need an ISBN?
Amazon Kindle doesn’t require one, but Apple Books, Kobo, and some distributors do. If you want consistency, it’s good to assign one.
How do I get an ISBN?
In the U.S., ISBNs are bought from Bowker. Other countries have their own agencies. Some platforms (like Amazon KDP) offer free ISBNs, but then they’re listed as the publisher.
How many ISBNs should I buy?
Each format and edition needs one ISBN. If you plan multiple books, buying a block (10 or 100) saves money long-term.
Can I reuse an ISBN for another book?
No. Once assigned, an ISBN is permanent and cannot be reused—even if the book is out of print.
What’s the difference between an ISBN and a barcode?
An ISBN is the number. A barcode is the scannable image on the back cover that includes the ISBN and price. Stores need both. If you only have the number, you can generate a barcode using one of the free barcode generators available online.
Is an ISBN the same as an ASIN?
No. An ASIN is Amazon’s internal ID for Kindle eBooks. It’s not the same as an ISBN, which is recognized worldwide.
Does Ken the Book Printer offer ISBN?
No. You’ll need to purchase one from Bowker. After obtaining your ISBN, generate the barcode and include it as part of your book’s artwork file.
