Two Ways to Make a Paperback

Choose the Right Binding

A softcover book can be made with standard glue binding or Smyth sewn binding. The right choice depends on budget, durability, paper choice, and how the book will be used.

Smyth sewn softcover

Stronger binding

  • Pages are folded into signatures, sewn together, wrapped with a softcover, and trimmed
  • Better durability and a higher-quality feel
  • Good for comics, graphic novels, art books, catalogs, and photo books

This is the stronger softcover option, made for planned print runs where durability, presentation, and paper choice matter.

Production Line

Built for Cost-Controlled Paperback Runs

Perfect bound softcover is our more cost-controlled paperback option. We keep the specs more standardized so paper buying, press setup, binding, and shipping can stay efficient for planned print runs.

1

Preset specs help lower cost

This option starts at 1,000 copies and uses a smaller set of paper choices, including 65 lb rough paper and 65 lb matte paper. Keeping the paper and production setup consistent helps lower the unit price.

2

Printed on the right press for the job

Black-and-white interiors are usually printed on a Heidelberg single-color press for clean, efficient text printing. For lighter full-color work, we may use our Komori G37 press. Using the right press for each type of book helps keep setup, paper waste, and production cost lower.

3

Better for larger distribution runs

Perfect bound softcover works well for books that need to be printed in larger quantities and distributed more broadly. The standardized setup keeps the book practical to produce, pack, and ship, especially when the goal is to keep the unit price reasonable across the full run.

FAQ

Common perfect bound softcover questions

Where does the name “perfect bound” come from?

Perfect bound is the standard paperback binding method. The pages are stacked, the spine edge is roughened, and the book block is glued into a wraparound soft cover. The word “perfect” does not mean it is the best binding. It comes from the bindery meaning of making a clean, square, finished book with a flat spine and trimmed edges.

What is the minimum order for perfect bound softcover?

Perfect bound softcover starts at 1,000 copies. This lets us keep the paper, press setup, and binding process efficient enough for a lower unit price. For smaller runs, sewn softcover may be a better fit.

Is perfect bound softcover good for novels?

Yes. In fact, a large percentage of novels on the market are perfect bound paperbacks. Besides cost, perfect bound works well for novels because it can be made with lighter-weight paper. This keeps the book lighter, easier to carry, and more comfortable to hold while reading.

When should I choose perfect bound instead of sewn softcover?

Quantity is usually the main driver. Perfect bound is a good option for larger runs where cost matters more, especially for mass-distribution books, marketing materials, trade show handouts, catalogs, and books meant to be given out in larger quantities. Sewn paperback is better when you want a more upgraded softcover book, especially for smaller or mid-size runs under about 2,000 copies. It has a stronger binding, opens better, and feels more premium than a standard glued paperback.

Can I choose custom paper for perfect bound books?

Yes, but the paper options are more limited than sewn paperback. For perfect bound books, we use a preset paper selection because not every paper works well with glued binding. The paper needs to bind cleanly, hold the glue properly, and still open well after production. If you want heavier paper stock or a more custom paper choice, sewn paperback is usually the better option.

Will the pages fall out?

No, not with normal handling. Older perfect bound books sometimes had pages loosen over time as the glue aged and the book was opened many times. Modern binding glue has improved a lot, so this issue is much less common now. As long as the book is handled normally and not forced open flat, the pages should stay secure and open just fine.
