Softcover Book Printing (Smyth Sewn)
A stronger softcover binding option for comics, graphic novels, art books, catalogs, and full-color books that need to hold up better than standard glue-bound paperbacks.
Two Ways to Make a Paperback
Choose the Right Softcover Binding
A softcover book can be made with standard glue binding or Smyth sewn binding. The right choice depends on durability, budget, and how the book will be used.
Smyth sewn softcover
Stronger binding
- Pages are folded into signatures, sewn together, wrapped with a softcover, and trimmed
- Better durability and a higher-quality feel
- Good for comics, graphic novels, art books, catalogs, and photo books
This is the stronger softcover option, made for planned print runs where durability, presentation, and paper choice matter.

Perfect bound softcover
Lower unit cost
- Pages are stacked, glued at the spine, wrapped with a softcover, and trimmed
- Simple construction with a lower unit cost
- Lower-cost runs for novels, workbooks, catalogs, and marketing materials
This is similar to common POD paperback binding, but made for planned print runs instead of one-at-a-time orders.

Production Line
Built Like a Softcover, Reinforced Like a Sewn Book
Your book still has the clean paperback shape readers expect, but the inside structure is different. We print the pages in signatures, sew them into a book block, then attach that block into the cover wrap and trim the finished book.
Offset printed on Heidelberg Speedmaster
Interior pages are printed on a Heidelberg Speedmaster offset press, the same press setup we use for our flagship hardcover books. This makes the format a strong fit for comic books, company catalogs, art books, and other image-heavy projects.
Sewn into a stronger book block
Pages are folded into signatures and sewn together before the cover is applied. This gives the book more strength than standard glue-only paperback binding, especially for books readers will open often.
Wrapped and trimmed as a clean softcover
After sewing, the book block is attached to the printed softcover wrap, pressed, and trimmed on three sides. The finished book has the clean square spine and paperback look customers expect, with a stronger sewn structure inside.

FAQ
Common sewn softcover questions
When should I choose Smyth sewn softcover instead of standard paperback?
Choose this binding when you want a paperback-style book, but the project needs more strength than standard glue binding. It is usually worth considering for full-color books, heavier paper, comics, graphic novels, catalogs, photography books, and art books. If the book is mostly text and keeping cost low is the main goal, standard paperback may be the better fit.
How long does sewn softcover production and shipping take?
Most production takes 2-4 weeks after your approval. Ocean shipping is our budget-friendly option and usually takes about 30 days after production. If you need books sooner, ask about split shipping, with part of the order shipped by air and the rest by ocean. Air shipments usually arrive in 7-10 days.
Is this quote for a complete book or just the binding?
The estimate is for the finished book, including the cardstock cover, printed interior pages, sewn binding, and estimated ocean shipping. Cover upgrades such as foil stamping, spot UV, French flaps, or special cover materials are available and priced separately.
Does Smyth sewn softcover lay flat?
No, not like a true lay-flat book. This sewn binding method opens more easily than a stiff glue-bound paperback, but it still has a softcover spine. The benefit is a more flexible opening feel and a stronger book block, not a completely flat book.
Is sewn softcover worth it for a text-only novel?
Usually not, unless it is a special edition or you want a more durable, higher-presentation book. For most text-only novels, standard perfect-bound paperback is more cost-effective. This option makes more sense when the paper is heavier, the interior is full color, or the book will be handled often.
Do I need to worry about the spine or gutter area?
Yes. Books made this way open better than glue-bound paperbacks, but they still do not lay completely flat. Keep important text, faces, logos, and key artwork away from the inside edge of the page. A good rule is to keep important details at least 1/4 inch away from the gutter. That area can be harder to see after the book is bound, especially on thicker books.
