What is Gilded Edges
Gilded edges are also known as gilt edges. They are a metallic finish applied to the trimmed page edges, usually in gold, silver, or copper, creating a bright reflective look when the book is closed.
How It Is Made
For metallic edges, the book blocks are bound and trimmed first, then bundled into a clamped stack. The edge surface is lightly sanded with fine grit to improve adhesion, a metallic film is applied, and a heated roller or press bonds the film to the edges. Excess film is trimmed away for a clean result.

Care and Durability
Gilding can help protect the edge surface from dust and minor moisture exposure, but it will not completely stop paper from aging overall. Yellowing is mainly driven by paper chemistry and oxidation.
Gilded Edges FAQ
Does gilding prevent yellowing?
It can help protect the edge surface and reduce exposure somewhat, but it will not completely stop paper aging.
Will the metallic edge look identical on every copy?
Expect consistent overall results, but not a perfectly identical look like a flat sheet. Signature structure can show faint lines on edges.
