What is Ombre Edges

Ombre edges are a gradient edge finish where color shifts gradually from one tone to another across the page edges. The gradient is visible when the book is closed and can be subtle or dramatic depending on color choices. Ombre can be produced as a sprayed look or as printed edges using gradient artwork.

Best For

Special editions where you want a softer, more modern premium finish.

Designs that can tolerate natural variation and still look good even if the blend zone shifts slightly.

Round spine books when the design remains simple and avoids tiny details.

Quick Notes

For best results, avoid full bleed pages with heavy ink right at the trim. Cleaner page edges produce cleaner edge finishes.

Expect consistent overall results, but not a perfectly identical blend line on every copy. Faint signature lines may be visible.

On a curved fore edge, solid colors and gradients are more predictable than detailed images or small text.

Files You May Need for Printed Ombre

If you want a specific gradient layout, prepare it as printed edges. You will need the book block thickness, then download the printed edge template, place the gradient into the template, and export one CMYK PDF. You only need to submit one file. If only the side edge is printed, leave the top and bottom sections of the template blank.

Care and Durability

In normal use, printed edge finishes hold up well. However, edges are frequently bumped during storage and shipping, so reasonable wear expectations are important.

Ombre Edges FAQ

Will printed ombre edges cause pages to stick?

If done correctly, no. The finish is applied while pages are tightly clamped and drying is controlled so pages flip normally.

What is the difference between ombre edges, sprayed edges, and stenciled edges?

Sprayed edges are a solid color finish. Ombre edges are a gradient color transition. Stenciled edges are a patterned design created with masking or edge artwork. For the cleanest results, avoid heavy full bleed ink right at the trim.
