What is Sprayed Edges

Sprayed edges are also known as painted edges. They are a finish where a solid color is applied to the trimmed page edges so the book block looks colored when the book is closed. Solid color edge finishes are often described as sprayed or painted edges, even when they are produced using modern printed edge methods.

Why People Choose Sprayed Edges

Sprayed edges make a book feel more premium and collectible, especially for special editions. Edge treatments have also been used historically to make books look prestigious and to help protect page edges from dust and minor moisture exposure.

Best For

Special editions and limited runs where you want a strong visual upgrade.

Thicker books where the page block becomes part of the design.

Simple solid colors and simple gradients, especially if the fore edge is not perfectly flat.

Quick Notes

If your interior pages are full bleed with heavy ink right at the trim, edges can look messier.

Expect overall consistency, but not perfectly identical results on every copy. Faint signature lines may be visible.

If the fore edge is curved, simple designs such as solid colors, gradients, and clean patterns are more predictable than detailed images or small text.

Files You May Need

If you want a precise color or a planned gradient, it can be handled as printed edges using artwork. The usual setup is one edge file prepared with the printer template and exported as a CMYK PDF. If you only want the side edge, the top and bottom areas of the template can be left blank.

Care and Durability

In normal use, edge finishes hold up well. Keep in mind the edge is the part that gets bumped most from shelving, sliding in and out of boxes, and general handling.

Sprayed Edges FAQ

Will the edges rub off, scratch, or flake?

In normal use, they hold up well. However, because the edge is frequently bumped during shelving and handling, some wear from rough treatment is possible.

Can the edge color transfer onto the page faces?

In most cases it is not an issue. The book block is clamped properly and the finish is applied in a controlled way to keep it on the edge surface. Heavy ink at the trim may affect what is realistic, so it should be reviewed before production.

Do edge finishes affect readability or cause pages to stick?

If done correctly, no. The finish is applied while pages are tightly clamped, and application and drying are controlled so the finish remains on the edge only.

What is the difference between ombre edges, sprayed edges, and stenciled edges?

Sprayed edges are a solid color finish. Ombre edges are a gradient color transition. Stenciled edges are a patterned design created with masking or edge artwork. For the cleanest results, avoid heavy full bleed ink right at the trim.
