What is Stenciled Edges
Stenciled edges are a patterned edge finish where parts of the edge are masked so color or artwork appears in specific shapes on the closed book block. In modern production, stenciled style patterns are often achieved as printed edges by supplying artwork that the printer applies directly to the trimmed page edges.
Best For
High contrast patterns with bold shapes.
Collectible editions where the edge becomes part of the cover concept.
Simple designs for round spine books, since the fore edge is not perfectly flat.
Quick Notes
Avoid heavy full bleed ink right at the trim for the cleanest edge. If only some pages are full bleed, that is usually fine. If the book must be full bleed, ask the printer first.
Expect consistent overall results, but not a perfectly identical edge like a flat sheet. Signature lines may be visible.
On a curved fore edge, detailed images and small text are harder to control. Solid colors, gradients, and clean patterns are more predictable.
Files You May Need
Printed edge patterns typically require one edge artwork file. Modify the printed edge template, place the artwork into the template, and export one CMYK PDF. If only the side edge is printed, leave the top and bottom sections blank.
Care and Durability
In normal use, printed edges hold up well, but the edge of a book is bumped often during shipping and handling.
Stenciled Edges FAQ
Will the printed edges rub off, scratch, or flake?
In normal use, they hold up well, but edges are exposed to bumps from shelving and boxes, so rough handling can cause wear.
Can edge color bleed onto the page faces?
In most cases it is not an issue because the book block is clamped properly and the finish is applied in a controlled way. If interior pages have heavy ink right at the trim, the printer should review it and advise what is realistic.
Will the edge design line up perfectly and look identical on every copy?
Expect consistent results overall, but not a perfectly identical look. Books are sewn in signatures and faint signature lines can appear, and signatures can shift slightly over time.
What is the difference between ombre edges, sprayed edges, and stenciled edges?
Sprayed edges are a solid color finish. Ombre edges are a gradient color transition. Stenciled edges are a patterned design created with masking or edge artwork. For the cleanest results, avoid heavy full bleed ink right at the trim.
