Softcover Hinge Score Line
A softcover hinge score line is the crease near the spine that helps the cover open more easily.
What the hinge score line does
The hinge score line is the crease near the spine of a softcover book. It gives the cover a controlled place to bend, so the book can open more easily without forcing the whole cover to flex randomly.
This is common on softcover and perfect bound books. It is especially helpful when the cover stock is thicker or when the book needs to open and close many times.
Keep important cover artwork away from this area
The score line is a working part of the cover, not a clean design area. Avoid placing important text, logos, faces, or the main book title directly on top of this line. If critical artwork sits there, it may bend, catch glare, or become harder to read after the book is used.
Most softcover covers are laminated. Lamination helps protect the printed cover, but repeated opening can make the hinge line more noticeable over time. This is normal for a cover area that is meant to bend.
