Children's book formats explained

Board Book vs Hardcover:Which Fits Your Children's Book?

A board book has thick paperboard pages for babies and toddlers. A hardcover has a rigid cover with standard paper pages for longer stories and older children.

Short answer

Choose a board book when the reader is a baby or toddler, the content is simple, and the book needs thick, tear-resistant pages. Choose a hardcover when the story is longer, the illustrations need more pages, or the book needs a more traditional picture book format.

Board book = thick paperboard pages
Hardcover = rigid cover plus paper pages

Board Book vs Hardcover: Key Differences

Question Board book Hardcover book
What is it? A book made with thick board from cover to cover. The cover and interior pages are made from the same board. Feels sturdy throughout. A book with a hard case cover and thinner paper pages inside.
Best age range Babies and toddlers, usually 0 to 3 years old. Preschool and older children, often 4 years and up.
Durability Very high. The pages are laminated, so they are tear resistant and wipeable. Strong cover, but interior pages can tear if handled roughly.
Story length Best for simple early learning books with short text, such as first words, counting, colors, or ABC concepts. Best for richer stories, detailed illustration spreads, and longer read-aloud books.
Typical page count 12 to 36 pages. As the page count increases, the book will become thicker and heavier. 28 to 40 pages. Most children's hardcover books fall within this range. Fewer pages may feel too short, while a longer book is usually better suited for older readers.
Typical book size 5" x 5" and 6" x 6" are common sizes, usually for smaller hands. 8" × 8", 10" × 10", 8" × 10", and 8.5" × 11"
Choose it when... The reader is very young and the book must survive heavy handling. The book needs a premium cover, more pages, or a more traditional picture-book feel.

How the books are built

The difference is not only the cover. Board books and hardcover books are built in different ways.

A board book is made from thick paperboard pages. The pages are printed, laminated, cut, and glued together into a solid book block. This is why the pages feel thick, wipeable, and harder to tear.

A hardcover book uses standard paper pages inside a rigid case cover. The pages are printed, gathered, and sewn or glued into a book block. After that, the book block is attached to the cover during the hardcover casing-in process.

This matters because board books are made for rough handling by very young readers. Hardcover books give you more room for longer stories, lighter pages, and a more traditional picture-book feel.

A simple way to decide

Not sure which book type fits your project? Start with these four questions before requesting pricing.

Reader age If the reader is under 3, start with board book. If the reader is older and can handle paper pages, hardcover may fit better.
Handling If the book will be tossed, bent, exposed to spills, or read daily, a board book is usually the better choice.
Content length If the story needs many spreads, longer text, or detailed pacing, hardcover gives you more room.
Your Reader You know your audience best. Picture how they will hold, read, carry, and use the book. That usually gives you the clearest answer.

Board book vs hardcover FAQ

Quick answers for the questions people usually ask before choosing a children's book format.

Is my children’s book too long for a board book?

A board book works best when the text is short and each spread is easy to understand quickly. If your story has longer paragraphs, many scenes, or detailed pacing, it may feel better as a hardcover. Board books can have more pages, but they become thicker, heavier, and more expensive as the page count goes up.

What age is too old for a board book?

There is no strict cutoff. Board books are usually made for babies and toddlers, but they can also work for preschool books, early learning books, or special gift books. If the child is ready for longer stories and can handle paper pages, hardcover may feel more natural.

Can the same book be printed as both a board book and hardcover?

Yes, but the files may need to be adjusted. Board books and hardcover books are built differently, so the cover setup, spine, page thickness, and inside margins may change. The artwork can often be reused, but it is best to prepare each version as its own print-ready file. Use the correct board book template and hardcover template when setting up the cover files.

Are board book pages wipeable or water resistant?

Board book pages are usually laminated, so they can handle light wiping and everyday handling better than paper pages. They are not fully waterproof, so they should not be soaked or washed under water. For babies and toddlers, the laminated surface helps the book stay cleaner and last longer.

Can I start with a board book first and print a hardcover later?

Yes. Like many physical products, a book can improve from one version to the next. Many of our clients start with a smaller board book run, get feedback from real readers and buyers, then make changes for the next printing or a future hardcover edition. Keep your artwork high resolution and editable, so the book is easier to adapt later.
