Board Book Printing FAQs

What is the minimum order quantity for board books?
250 copies.

Are board books waterproof or just wipe-resistant?
Wipe-resistant, and somewhat tear-resistant. Our board books are laminated by default, either with glossy or anti-scratch matte.

Can board books have die-cuts, windows, flaps, or interactive parts?
Yes, many of these features are possible, but they make the project more custom. Die-cuts are common for board books, and we can usually handle them without issue. Windows, lift-the-flap elements, and other interactive parts are more complicated because they require extra setup, testing, and handwork. For small quantities, these features can also become costly. If your board book has a highly customized structure, please send us the design, dieline, or reference images. We can review the project and let you know whether it is something we can take on.

What page counts and sizes work best for board books?
There is no single best size or page count for a board book. From our experience, many board books use a 6 x 6 or 8 x 8 square format. We also do larger formats, such as 10 x 12 vertical. For page count, many board books are usually kept around 20 to 30 pages. That said, on our end, we can do custom sizes and custom page counts as well.

How should board book files be set up?
Board book files are set up pretty much the same way as a hardcover book. We need two files: one cover file that includes the front cover, back cover, and spine, and one interior file for the pages. For the cover, you can generate the template from our template generator. For the interior pages, use the standard 1/8" bleed, and make sure the page count is even. If the book has a custom shape, you will also need to provide a separate cutline PDF.

Are rounded corners standard on board books?
Yes. Rounded corners are standard on board books, and they are our default as well. Board books are usually handled quite roughly, so rounded corners help prevent bent corners and make the book more child-friendly.

Can board books use foil or UV?
Yes. Board books can have cover finishes such as foil and UV, just like other types of books.

Will the board book feel like a real retail-quality children’s book?
Yes. Our board books are built as professional children’s board books, not short-run photo books or lightweight sample products. The pages are mounted onto thick board, laminated by default, and finished with rounded corners.

Can I get a sample for my board book?
Yes, but for board books we only offer an offset plate sheet sample. We do not offer a digitally printed board book sample. The offset sheet sample is printed using the same printing method as the production run, so it is mainly for checking color and reviewing how the printed sheet will look before the full order goes into production. You can also see the actual page size on the sample pages.

How thick or sturdy will the pages be?
The pages are about 1 mm thick, and that is also the standard thickness for a board book. We print on one side of 350 gsm cardstock, similar to the cardstock used for premium postcards, then glue and press two sheets together to form one board page. The result is a double-sided printed page with a thickness roughly equal to 700 gsm.
