Perfect Bound Book Printing FAQs

What paper and cover options do you offer for perfect bound books?
We offer glossy, matte, and uncoated paper options. Our perfect bound softcover books use folded signatures that are Smyth sewn before the soft cover is attached. This construction works with a wider range of paper weights than glue-only binding. The best paper still depends on the trim size, page count, artwork, and how you want the finished book to feel.

How long does perfect bound production usually take?
Most production takes about 2 to 4 weeks after proof approval. The exact timeline depends on the quantity, book specifications, finishing options, and current production schedule.

Can perfect bound books have dust jackets, foil, UV, or edge printing?
Yes. Perfect bound books can have dust jackets, foil, UV, or edge printing. For novel-style perfect bound books, it is actually quite common to pair them with a dust jacket. In general, these finishing features are applied the same way across different book types, regardless of the binding style.

How much gutter should I expect in a perfect bound book?
About 0.25". Even with Smyth sewing, the softcover spine does not open completely flat, so you should expect some gutter loss. A background image can continue across the spread, but important text or graphics should be kept away from the gutter area.

When should I choose perfect bound instead of hardcover for a premium or photo-heavy book?
Choose our perfect bound softcover with sewn signatures when you want a lighter, flexible book with a strong sewn book block. It works well for illustrated books, premium editions, graphic novels, and books that will be opened often. Choose hardcover book printing when a rigid cover and a more formal presentation matter most.

Will the pages fall out?
No, not with normal handling. The pages are folded into signatures and sewn together, so they do not rely on spine glue alone. Adhesive is still used when the sewn book block and soft cover are assembled, but the sewing gives the book additional strength.
