Working With Us FAQs

Are you a U.S. printer, a broker, or a factory partner?
We are a factory partner. We do not own printing equipment in the United States, but we also don't send each job to whichever printer is available. We work closely with two dedicated printing factories in China, which gives us a more stable relationship, more control over scheduling and quality. On the customer side, we stay involved from quote to delivery, so you have our experienced team to look after the job. We also manage our own shipping channels for ocean freight and air freight, which helps us keep better control of the timeline and status updates. We are not the cheapest way to find a factory overseas, and we are not trying to be. Our value is knowing how to turn a book project into a controlled production job, with the right specs, the right setup, and the right shipping plan, while helping minimize the risk and avoid common pitfalls along the way.

Who is a good fit for Ken the Book Printer?
We are usually a good fit for authors, self-publishers, publishers, studios, and organizations that want offset printing rather than POD. The fit is especially strong when you care about material choices, production guidance, packaging, and presentation details such as dust jackets, foil, cloth covers, slipcases, or custom finishes. Customers who already know they need a real print run usually get the most value from the process.

Who may not be a good fit for this service?
If you only need one or two copies, need books next week, or want the simplest possible POD workflow, we are probably not the best fit. A local digital printer or a POD platform may make more sense for that kind of project. We are also not the right match for customers who want to skip file review and just push a job through with no production discussion. Our process is more hands-on than that.

Can you match a reference book or sample I already have?
That depends. We should be able to produce about 80% of the book types and features you see on the market. In most cases, we can get a good idea of what you are looking for if you send us some detailed photos or videos of the reference book. If you send the physical sample to us, that is also an option, and it helps us better determine things like the paper weight and page coating.

How do you handle complex projects with multiple add-ons or tight timelines?
We assess the project before giving you a yes, and we will give you a realistic timeline and options. Manufacturing can get complicated because it often involves different parties. For example, with foil stamping, we may need to order the foil plate from another manufacturer, and if the foil color you want is not in our stock, we would need to order that as well. Even though our operation is smooth and efficient, unforeseen delays can still happen. Please also keep in mind that the more features you add, the more complexity the project will have.

Why use Ken the Book Printer instead of POD?
POD is useful when you need very small quantities, instant availability, or no inventory commitment. Our service makes more sense when you want better unit pricing at higher volume, better quality and consistency, and more control over materials and finishes. That difference matters a lot for more mature hardcover projects and premium editions. POD is not necessarily bad. It is just a different fit. If you need 20 copies fast, POD may be the smarter choice. If you want 250 copies or more with real production choices, a custom offset path will give you a more professional product.

Will you point out problems before the book goes into production?
Yes, we try to catch obvious issues before production. Custom book printing has a lot of moving parts, and small setup problems can affect the final result. When we review a project, we look for things that stand out, such as unclear page order, missing bleed, unusual file setup, risky material choices, finish placement concerns, or specs that do not match the customer’s goal. If something looks off, we will point it out or ask questions before moving forward. That said, our review does not replace the customer’s own proofing and final file check. The customer is still responsible for carefully reviewing and approving the final files and proof. Our goal is to communicate clearly, catch the obvious issues when we see them, and help reduce avoidable mistakes before production starts.

Will I be dealing with a sales rep who does not understand production?
No. All of our account managers are trained specifically for book production, and that is one part we are really proud of. We are not here just to collect specs and forward them to a factory. We are trained to understand your project and help guide you toward the options that fit it best. We want customers to understand what they are choosing and why it matters.
