What paper and cover options do you offer for perfect bound books?
We offer glossy, matte, and uncoated paper options, similar to other book types, but the paper thickness choices are more limited. That is partly because we set up our perfect bound product to keep the cost as controlled as possible for mass-distribution books. By limiting the paper selection to a smaller group of stocks, we can buy in bulk, process in bulk, and keep both material and labor costs down. That does not mean the paper is low quality. It just means the selection is tighter for efficiency. Also, compared with sewn softcover, perfect bound has more limitations on paper choice and thickness, so we keep the options within a range that works well for this type of binding.
How long does perfect bound production usually take?
About 2 to 3 weeks. Perfect bound is usually a simpler job, so it often takes less time than a sewn binding print job.
Can perfect bound books have dust jackets, foil, UV, or edge printing?
Yes. Perfect bound books can have dust jackets, foil, UV, or edge printing. For novel-style perfect bound books, it is actually quite common to pair them with a dust jacket. In general, these finishing features are applied the same way across different book types, regardless of the binding style.
How much gutter should I expect in a perfect bound book?
About 0.25". The spine is glued, so the book does not open flat, and you should expect some gutter loss. If you have a background image, it can still continue across the spread and reach the page edges for a more natural look, but important text or graphics should be kept away from the gutter area.
When should I choose perfect bound instead of hardcover for a premium or photo-heavy book?
Choose perfect bound when cost, distribution level, and customization are the main factors you are considering. Some book types are naturally a good fit for perfect bound, such as text-only novels and marketing materials.
Will the pages fall out?
No, not with normal handling. Older perfect bound books sometimes had pages loosen over time as the glue aged and the book was opened many times. Modern binding glue has improved a lot, so this issue is much less common now. As long as the book is handled normally and not forced open flat, the pages should stay secure and open just fine.
